Check out the Tower Theater
In terms of Upper Darby attractions, the Tower Theater may take the cake: Voted #1 on TripAdvisor’s list of activities in the area, reviewers say that the theater provides an “awesome and historic venue” with “great acoustics” to boot.
Built in 1927, the theater was one of the township’s first movie houses, showing vaudeville acts as well. In the 1970s, the theater suffered a severe fire and was refurbished, becoming a popular music act venue.
The venue became a true legend when it served as the home to a number of legendary musicians’ debut performances. The Tower Theater introduced America to David Bowie, Genesis with Peter Gabriel and Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and featured Jackson Browne, Lou Reed and Steve Miller as regulars. Concerts are still held there today, so be sure to buy a ticket during your visit to Upper Darby.
Take in some history
Although Upper Darby is only 7.9 square miles in area, the township features two sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Collen Brook Farm and Lower Swedish Cabin.
Lower Swedish Cabin may be one of the United State’s oldest log cabins, built between 1640 and 1650 by Swedish immigrants. In the early 1900s the cabin also served as the site for several movies by film pioneer Siegmund Lubin. Collen Brook Farm, home of noted educator and political leader George Smith, includes a farmhouse, a granite spring house and a carriage house, with some sections built as early as 1700.
Experience the area’s best Italian cuisine
Italian restaurant Bona Cucina, ranked as one of the top restaurants in Upper Darby, features classic Italian food and simple décor. TripAdvisor reviewers say Bona Cucina’s lobster bisque is the best they’ve ever had and their crabmeat stuffed mushrooms are fantastic.
“From the minute you walk in the door, the delicious aromas make your mouth start to water,” one reviewer wrote. Sounds pretty great!
Pro tip: The restaurant is cash-only and BYOB, so bring your wallet and a bottle of wine if your group wants one.
Always be prepared
As with any travel situation, preparing for the worst-case scenario is always best. Consider bringing items like extra doses of important medications, nutritious snacks and battery packs for dead cell phones. Keeping the number on hand for a 24-hour locksmith in Upper Darby couldn’t hurt either.
