Have you ever stopped to think about how often we rely on locks? From the locks on our front doors to the locks in our cars, even the locks on our desk cabinets, we are constantly surrounded by these mechanisms. We depend on our locks to function properly whenever we need them. With the daily use of locks and keys, normal wear and tear is to be expected. These are three of the most common lock issues and solutions that locksmiths in northeast Philadelphia service.
Clogged Device
It’s not rare for dirt, dust, and other particles to find their way into your locking mechanism. When this occurs, the mechanism can become jammed, seize up, and malfunction. Before calling your local northeast Philadelphia locksmith, try cleaning out the lock with a semi-damp cotton swab or Q-tip. This should help to clean up some of the dust and dirt without risking the possibility of rusting the lock.
Loose Locks
Between regular use and age, locks can become loose. A loose lock poses a huge security issue as they are more susceptible to being broken into. Bobby pins, paper clips, and other tools can easily be used to pick the lock when it is in this state.  This type of problem requires the immediate attention of a locksmith to prevent any serious security issues.
Stuck Key
Putting the wrong key in a lock is something we’ve all made the mistake of doing. Many times, it’s easy to pull the key out of the lock and try again with the new key. On the other hand, there are times when the incorrect key can get stuck in the lock. Try spraying lubricant into the lock. If this does not work, do not try removing the key. Trying to pull out a stuck key without lubricant can cause irreparable damage to the mechanism; ultimately resulting in the need to replace the whole lock unit.
Even though these common issues can sometimes have quicj fixes, calling a professional locksmith can guarantee that no further damage is done to your lock. Use your best judgement when trying to get these issues resolved.
